Many people know and have tasted plum but Green Sour Plum is not well-known and remains a delicacy that locals in Gilgit Baltistan love. It is present in market for a short time as they ripe to become sweet. Thus, one can only enjoy this fruit during its season.
It is a cherry sized fruits and unripe just like unripe mangoes it is sour but very crunchy and juicy. These sour plums are picked from tree early and they get sold out rather quickly.
Sour Plums are enjoyed in Middle East,and in few regons in Asia. there are many variety but all are enjoyed in sour and unripe. In Iran they are known as goje sabz, in Lebonan as jarareng, in Turkey as erik , in China as mei, and in Japan as ume.
In Pakistan’s northern region of Gilgit Baltistan it is known as Gindaru, Gindaro, Gindawer, Gurdalew, Gundaru. These eatten as sour when not fully ripe.
Some people like to dip it in salt and spicies to create a spicy sour flavour. Green unripe almond are also a favoruite sour fruit. But it ha bit harder shell campared to the green plum which is juiciers, crunchier and not bitter at all.
The perfect time to get your hands on green plums in Gilgit Baltistan are during spring. Usually they are ready during the beginning of cherry season.
Do not eat too many of these if its your first time because they are unripe and many cuase stomach hurt.
