Karambar Lake (also known as Qurumbar Lake) is a high altitude lake located in Broghil Chitral between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit–Baltistan in Pakistan. It is the 31st highest lake in the world and 2nd highest in Pakistan at a height of 14,121 feet (4,304 m) and one of the highest biologically active lakes on earth.
It shares borders with the Wakhan Corridor (alternatively Wakhan) which is the narrow strip of territory in northeastern Afghanistan that extends to China and separates Tajikistan from Pakistan. The remoteness and difficulty to access the region has kept the people very isolated. The people are Wakhi and speak Wakhi language. They stay in close contact with the Wakhi people of Wakhan. Winter are extremely harsh and due to lack of any development people live in quite poverty.
Tourist rarely go to the area. Each year only few people visit the region for trekking and camping. Since the region is cut off from the main cities no shops or hotels are available. You would require to get Permits as it is border area. It is relatively easy to get permits for Karambar lake and Darkhote pass then for the Boroghil pass. It is better to go with a tour agency as they can manage the permits, logistics and alot of other arrangement that will be required.
The trails and trek is not easy and not for first timers. The treks are moderate to difficult. And due to the remoteness it is difficult to get help quickly.
People usually travel from Islamabad to Chitral where they finalize their purchases and packing (as it is the main and city/town) before leaving for a jeep ride towards Mastuj and then to Kishmanja and Ishkarwaz. From that point on you have to trek for 3-4 days.
